Ingredients

For the sponge
7g Yeast
225g Strong White Bread Flour
1 tbsp Sugar
1 tsp Salt
200ml Water
For the dough
2 Egg medium
225g Strong White Bread Flour
1 tbsp Sugar
1 tsp Salt
50g Butter melted
For the topping
1 Egg yolk
1 tbsp Water
Poppy seeds

Challah Bread…

…is traditionally a Jewish ceremonial bread, from which a small portion has been set aside as an offering. It is usually braided, and enjoyed on the Sabbath and on Jewish holidays.

This traditional recipe is perfect to be enjoyed at Easter time. It takes a while to make, but it’s so worth it! The soft bread is not only delicious but looks great too!

Place all of the sponge ingredients into the bread machine in the order listed above. Select BASIC DOUGH 2hour 20min and press start.

When the program has finished, press the stop pad, leaving the dough inside. Do not lift the lid. Leave for 8 hours. If necessary, transfer to a bowl, cover with a damp tea towel and set aside.

Remove the bread pan, keeping the sponge in the pan, add the dough ingredients in the order listed above. Select BASIC DOUGH 2hour 20min and press start.

Lightly oil a baking sheet.

Tip the dough on to a lightly floured surface and knock it back gently.

Divide into three pieces. Roll until 10"/25cm long and plait. You could make a round loaf if preferred.

Place the plait on to the prepared baking sheet and cover with lightly oiled cling film.

Leave to rise in a warm place for 40 – 60 mins or until almost doubled in size.

Pre heat the oven to 190C.

In a small bowl mix the egg yolk with the water. Brush the mixture over the bread and sprinkle with poppy seeds.

Bake for 35-40 mins or until the bread is a deep golden brown.
